Custom Display Cases
I also make display cases, in glass or acrylic. Soldered, glued, or wooden edged, they are beautifully made and inexpensive.
I can build these display cases in any size and type. Custom orders are my specialty. Prices depend on the type of case, base, and size.
The glass cases can be of copper foil soldered type, the least expensive yet best looking for smaller sizes up to about six cubic feet, or wooden framed, for larger sizes. The plexiglas cases are more costly and time consuming to make so are more expensive. They can be cemented, the cheapest and best looking up to about six cubic feet, or wooden framed, for the larger sizes.
Copper foil soldered type have the thinnest edges where the glass panes meet, just like stained glass windows are made. The edges can be shiny solder color, or chemically darkened to a dark brown color. These are the least expensive cases I make, yet look the best, although size is limited to under six cubic feet.
Wooden framed cases are much more time consuming, so expensive. I use oak, walnut, basswood, cherry, or redwood for the edges and corners. The side and top panels can be made so each is separately removable, which I reccomend for very large cases as for a large sailing ship model or diorama.
Bases are good, clear plywood, edged and surfaced with oak, walnut, basswood, cherry, or redwood. Solid wooden bases can be ordered, as well as custom materials. Special surfaces for the top of the base can be ordered to fit the purpose of the case, such as fabric, mat board, carpet, linoleum, a document or map, a photograph, a mirror, glass, etc.
I attach small, padded "feet" to the bottom of the base to raise the case off the surface on which it may sit, to protect the surface, to look better, and to ease lifting. The glass or acrylic top can be firmly attached with screws or silicone, or sit free into a groove or slot in the base.
Approximate prices. Prices mainly reflect cost of the base, determined by size. Large or long bases are most expensive. A tall case increases cost proportionally less. A solid wooden base increases cost.
Soldered glass top, single strength glasss, walnut edged base.
There will be a shipping and handling charge that will vary depending on the size of the case. It will be whatever it is through US Mail, UPS or FEDEX.
This is another of my ivory aircraft models, the famous Beech 18. This is an example of one of my soldered glass cases. It is also an example of why I don't like working with certain art galleries. I got $800.00 for this model, but it sold for $2500.00. Then the gallery director told me I want too much for my ivory aircraft models. Go figure.
